Whilst on a recent visit to the Australasian Road Rescue Challenge I attended a presentation from Holden Motors, during which one of their engineers gave details of how they have constructed their new Commodore VF model. They use Ultra High Strength Steel (UHSS) in key areas which adds stiffness, whilst at the same time reducing weight and increasing fuel efficiency. When details of the increased use of UHSS were shown, there were experienced rescuers in the room who audibly said: "We won't be able to cut that!" This is the kind of reaction I am becoming more and more used to when the topic of UHSS is raised, and it is evidence that there is a need to put this increased strength in context.
