A fire within the baggage handling facilities of any airport terminal could result in massive short-term service disruption. Anna Hayes explains BAA pic's safety philosophy and looks at how this is implemented in the baggage halls of Gatwick Airport. 'The fire safety culture within airports across the globe is on a rapid upward slope' says Russ Timpson, BAA plc's group fire strategy manager. Despite well-established safety procedures within BAA airport terminals, Mr Timpson admits that the hazard of fire has not always been considered as a major risk in many of the world's airports.
