The Creation of Firebrake Wales (Atal Tan Cymru) in mid-2003 marked the start of a new era for community fire safety (CFS) in Wales. The formation of this new charitable organisation comes as the result of a unique working partnership between the three Welsh fire and rescue services - North Wales, Mid and West Wales and South Wales - and the Welsh Assembly Government. It was recognised that, beyond the excellent work undertaken by the CFS departments of individual fire services, more needed to be done on a national basis to raise the public's awareness of fire safety. This could only be done by creating a new body which would have the capability to think and act on a national remit and to forge new partnerships across different sectors. Firebrake is now a key player in setting the agenda for the future. Firebrake's national remit is to promote the CFS message through public education, promotional activity and research. The overall objective is to stop fire before it starts and to make the public aware of their personal risk of fire. Edwina Hart AM, Minister for Social Justice, launched Firebrake Wales at the Royal Welsh Show in July 2003. The Minister is a key supporter of the organisation's objectives and is fully supportive of the alliance which has been formed. As a key partner, the Welsh Assembly Government is actively involved with joint projects delivered through Firebrake.
