摘要

The call comes in for you to respond to a pediatric emergency, a six-year-old female with difficulty breathing. Trying to remember the last time you cared for a critically sick child, you think, "Difficulty breathing? The pediatric kit. Do we have everything we need?" You know you may not be the first to arrive, and you consider the level of experience and comfort that the first-in crew has with pediatrics. On arrival, you find first responders already on scene. As you step out, you notice that voices are louder than they should be, but it's difficult to tell if this is from confrontation, concern, or chaos. The lead paramedic begins assessing the patient as other family members gather in. The child's mother turns to speak to you, clearly needing reassurance as much as the paramedic needs fewer family members crowding in around him. Mom asks how bad it is, but you aren't sure just from looking. Your shrug is less than reassuring as you hear the paramedic say, "OK, let's go."
