When in 1975, as an assistant professor at the Polytechnic of Turin, I spent 6 months at the Laboratorium fur Betriebsfestigkeit in Darmstadt, I worked under the supervision of E. Haibach on the application to welded structures in aluminium alloys of a methodology for fatigue assessment of welded structures that he had proposed and applied to steel structures more than 10 years before. The methodology proposed by Haibach, based on the measurement of the local strain very near to the weld toe and developed to evaluate a uniform scatter band for the fatigue strength of welded joints, although proposed on a purely phenomenological basis, was, to my knowledge, the first application of theoretical fundamentals which were analysed and clarified only much later.
