Cruise law a 'game of inches'

The Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act of 2010 was signed by President Obama on 27 July. It mandates new hardware and software for cruise vessels calling at US ports, but the industry has reason to be cheerful about it.rnBy year-end 2011, cruise-ship railings must be at least 42 inches (107cm) from deck, cabin doors must have peepholes, and vessels must possess technology "for capturing images of passengers who have fallen overboard". In addition, newbuildings with keels laid after 27 July require cabin doors equipped with security latches and time-sensitive technology.
