India, with its multitude of inherent contradictions, continues to excite and disappoint at the same time. Hopes rose in the country on the back of massive support in the April/ National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its charismatic and controversial leader, Narendra Modi. The recent decision by the BRICS countries to set up a bank to fund infrastructure projects has raised the profile of the Modi government. At the same time, Western nations are disappointed over what they see as India's stubborn reluctance to do away with food subsidies that have held up World Trade Organization talks.
