1. Three armed attacks and two tanker hijackings during the first two months of 2018 have highlighted the ongoing danger to ships operating off Nigeria and the wider west African coast and have led to an increase in the use of military armed guards. "The threat to shipping in the Gulf of Guinea is the highest it has been for some time," warned Max Williams, fleet operations director at Africa Risk Compliance, a maritime security company. Williams noted that since March 2017, there had been 106 incidents in Nigerian waters, including incidents on local vessels.
