Fuel is vital for an engine, but poor quality fuel can cause wear and damage that first affects the economic performance and in time can cause severe mechanical failure. Most ship operators take what steps they can to ensure that the fuel they or their charterers buy is delivered complying with the ISO 8217 standard. And although there are rogue firms that will sell fuel with unexpected and unwanted "additives", most reputable suppliers do at least deliver what has been ordered. Once on board it is not exactly treated with care being stored in tanks that contain residues of earlier supplies, seawater and rust and scale from the tank surfaces.
