New IACS head promises support for IMO

Oh Kong-gyun of the Korean Register of Shipping (KR), who has replaced DNV's Tor E Svensen as chairman of IACS, intends to use his year in office strengthening IACS'credibility and position as the world's top maritime safety rule-making and standard-setting body and has declared his support for the IMO. Oh took over the reins of IACS on 1 July. In a recent interview with Solutions' sister magazine Fairplay he said that he believes that the IMO will benefit from a stronger Asian contribution, not least because of the region's dominance in shipbuilding and shipowning.The revolving chairmanship system of IACS that gives each member society a turn and the predominance of European societies in IACS means that the world's largest shipbuilding region does have longer to wait for its turn at the top. KR has tended to restrict its operations to its home territory and more recently has been increasing its involvement in China.
