Some IMO regulations lay down highly prescriptive requirements, but ballast water has been approached rather differently. So long as water treated by a system meets the requisite standard with regard to viable organisms, the means of achieving that result is left open. As a result, makers of treatment systems have come up with many and varied ways of treating water.
