Businesseurope Wants Successful Conclusion Of Acta Talks

BusinessEurope, Europe's biggest business lobby, has called for a successful conclusion of the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) negotiations, optimistically scheduled by the French EU Presidency for the end of year. BusinessEurope's repeated stance follows a resolution adopted by the Council, on 25 September, on combating counterfeiting and piracy. The Council, notably, welcomed the European Commission's communication of July 2008 for an industrial property rights strategy for Europe also with respect to initiatives to combat counterfeiting and piracy at the borders and outside the EU and work on the multilateral ACTA agreement. "Vigorous and coordinated action is also needed to deal with the emerging abuse of compulsory licensing and the erosion of intellectual property rights that impact on a wide range of diverse industries," noted the International Intellectual Property Protection Forum (Japan) and the US Chamber of Commerce following a round-table with representatives, on 26 September in Brussels.
