Federations want more efficiency in energy technology plan

Eight European associations have called on the EU's Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs to focus more on energy efficiency. The associations, which promote energy efficiency products and services, see a grave risk of energy efficiency becoming "detached" from the main thrust of the energy and climate package. They fear that energy efficiency may be "downgraded", taking only a secondary role in tackling climate change. In their joint letter, sent during the summer break, the eight also call for Piebalgs to seek a mandatory and measurable target to improve energy efficiency by 20% by 2020. A central demand of the associations is that Piebalgs take heed of the European Parliament Resolution of 9 July 2008 on the European Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET-Plan). The resolution calls on the Commission to give a more prominent role to energy efficiency in the SET-Plan. Associations also point to the "disappointing" lack of ambition in National Energy Efficiency Action Plans.
