No upsurge in problems related to GMOs

The Commission did not detect any upsurge in cases of contamination of agricultural products or foods by unauthorised GMOs in the European Union in 2008. On the contrary, the rapid alert system issued only 34 notifications for such problems, compared with 48 for the previous year. Most of the problems in 2008 were related to rice products from China contaminated with the GM Bt 63, and to a lesserrnextent rice products contaminated with traces of LL601 from the United States.
