UK disappointed at new energy label

Lord Philip Hunt, the UK's minister for sustainable development, is disappointed at the new energy labelling system proposed by the European Commission and agreed upon by member states at a regulatory committee meeting, on 31 March. Instead of re-labelling less efficient home appliances, the new labelling system will indicate the percentage of energy savings which new more efficient appliances are capable of delivering. Consumer organisations point out that the new system will lead to 'A' graded home appliances, which should in theory be the most efficient, eventually becoming among the least efficient. "It is disappointing though that we could not agree to update the labelling system that we know consumers understand and have confidence in," said Lord Hunt. "We now have a job to do in working constructively with consumers, retailers and manufacturers to ensure that consumers are able to easily identify the most energy efficient appliances available."
