Greenpeace has expressed its "grave concern" about the aid schemes for scrapping old vehicles, which has been implemented to promote the sale of new vehicles in many EU member states. In a letter, dated 9 April, addressed to the Commissioner for Enterprise and Industry, Giinter Verheugen, Greenpeace explains why it believes these measures to be counter-productive from an environmental perspective and asks the commissioner to advise against schemes that conflict with EU climate change, environment and transport policies and recommend that member states implement genuinely 'green' support mechanisms for the automobile sector. It has notably requested that subsidised models should be clearly more respectful of the environment and have a higher safety level than those which they are replacing (not currently included in any existing schemes).
