Ministers call for international declaration

EU agriculture ministers should adopt, without debate, during their next monthly meeting in Brussels, on 23 March, conclusions calling for an international declaration on animal welfare to be worked out. Such a commitment would, they hope, help reduce the widening gap between the requirements for European producers and their competitors in non-EU countries.rnThe ministers are therefore set to ask the European Commission to continue supporting international initiatives aimed at raising awareness and creating a broader consensus on questions linked to animal welfare and to launch new ones, by exploring, for example, possible exchanges with developing countries based on production systems that respect animal welfare.
