Fresh water collections have tripled in fifty years and irrigated zones doubled during the same period. This phenomenon is linked to demographic pressure, but also to the 'abusive and predatory' collection of the resource. While demand is increasing, some countries are already reaching the limits of their water resources. And the expected effects of climate change should further accentuate this phenomenon. Competition for water is becoming apparent - between countries, between urban and rural areas and also between the various sectors of activity-which is, in future, likely to result in a more marked politicisation of water-related issues. Published on the eve of the 5th World Water Forum, the 3rd UN World Water Development Report entitled 'Water in a changing world' is a serious warning cry.
