Simplification is in view for maritime transporters. Currently, a ship that travels between two Community ports is subject to customs and administrative formalities as burdensome as if it were travelling to a port outside the EU or as though it were arnquestion ot international trade. This burden could soon be a thing of the past: the European Commission proposed, on 21 January, considerably simplifying the administrative formalities in the events of intra-Com m unity trips. This would put maritimerntransport on a level playing field compared to land transport, whose administrative formalities were considerably reduced with the introduction of the single market, in 1993. An action plan destined to create a 'maritime transport space without barriers' and recommendations running up to 2018 will also be presented, which list a series of other measures and fields of activity likely to be simplified, reduce costs and make the European maritime sector more competitive.
