An Imperfect Package That 'retains The Original Architecture'

The European Parliament, gathered for its plenary session in Strasbourg, on 17 December, adopted no less than six legislative texts, thus putting the European Union (in principle at least) on the path to a 'greener' economy. The result of a compromise hurriedly negotiated by the French EU Presidency (see separate article), the energy-climate change package as adopted "confirms the objectives that the European Union has set for itself and, despite the adjustments made, retains the architecture and the environmental integrity of the initial proposal," said EU Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas and his colleague responsible for energy, Andris Piebalgs.
