The creation of a group of international scientific experts on biodiversity within the framework of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is being welcomed as political leaders and scientists denounce the many weaknesses in knowledge on biodiversity.rnThe establishment of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) was approved after two years of debate by nearly 90 countries, on 11 June in South Korea.
