In 1997 the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) established, pursuant to Resolution XIX-19 of the IOC Assembly, the Advisory Body of Experts on the Law of the Sea (ABE-LOS) to advise IOC on issues of marine science and technology arising under the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of Sea (LOSC) and in particular Part XIII (Marine Scientific Research) and Part XIV (Development and Transfer of Marine Technology).
