Ministers suggest ways to support maritime transport

The Union's 27 transport ministers support the 'Blue Belt' concept launched by the European Commission on 30 November. It is meant to enable ships to operate in the internal market with a minimum of red tape. The conclusions on the full integration of waterborne transport into the EU's transport and logistics chains, adopted on 2 December, also stress the need for agreement in the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) on the adoption of CO2 emissions reduction measures and ask the Commission to present an action plan to help the sector improve its environmental performance. The Council states that the action plan should concern areas like alternative fuels, research and innovation, green technologies, infrastructure, finance instruments and the like.
