Europe's rubbish issue

Europeans' dustbins are overflowing every year just that little bit more. Of course, they are doing more sorting but, during the second European Week for Waste Reduction, on 20-26 Novem ber, they were invited in particular to cut their waste down further to safeguard the environment. More than 4,000 events are to be held in sixteen countries as part of this awareness-raising campaign, which is supported by the European Commis sion. The problem is that the production of municipal waste (household waste but also sewage, such as from waste water treatment plants) has nearly doubled in Europe in thirty years. And, in 2008, the average European produced 524 kgs of waste per year, ie 10 kgs per week.
