EU legislation to be interpreted 'creatively'

There are lots of questions but few answers as to the consequences should an oil platform accident similar to the one in the Gulf of Mexico happen in EU waters. Members of the European Parliament are concerned about possible weaknesses in prevention systems and in the European legal arsenal, particularly on the matter of liability. They voiced these concerns clearly, first in a debate in the Committee on Environment (ENVI), on 22 June, then the following day at a public hearing organised by Corinne Lepage (ALDE, France), chair of the EP's Coastal Zones Intergroup.
