Commission delays initiative

Facing similar delays as in 2009, the European Commission will now further study the initiative to realign taxes on fuels so as to internalise costs relating to their CO_2 emissions. Taxation Commissioner Algir-das Semeta had been pressing for a carbon tax that would include a charge of €20 per tonne of CO_2. This was based on a series of impact studies with taxes ranging from €4 to €30. Semeta's cabinet should now further study the effects of a proposed carbon tax on different sectors.
