The final negotiating session on the proposal for a regulation on 'novel foods' did not lead to an agreement between representatives of the European Parliament and Council. At dawn on 29 March, following 11 hours of discussion, the co-legislators threw in the towel. The introduction into the food chain of food from cloned animals and their offspring was the main bone of contention.
