BusinessEurope has made known its opposition to a proposal presented by the European Commission in July to amend the regulation on auctions in the framework of the EU's Emission Trading Scheme (ETS). In a letter, sent on 1 October to members of the EP Committees on the Environment (ENVI) and Energy (ITRE), BusinessEurope's Director-General Philippe de Buck states that his organisation supports an open debate on the ETS after 2020 and on the coherence of Europe's indus- trial, energy and climate policies, crucial for industrial competitiveness. In the meantime, short-term measures, such as this change to the ETS auctioning regulation to backload allowances, "must be avoided as they interfere with a more constructive discussion on how to achieve a systemic solution".
