ETS: BusinessEurope warns against hasty decisions

In a letter sent to European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, on 27 June, Philippe de Buck, director-general of BusinessEurope, warns against any hasty decisions to change the functioning of the EU's Emission Trading Scheme (ETS). This would be "counterproductive" and would create considerable uncertainty for enterprises that could have strong repercussions. BusinessEurope points out the industry's support for the ETS and recognises the "central role" the scheme plays in EU climate policy. Changes are needed but they must take place in the framework of the debate on the ambitions for the ETS up to 2030 and in close consultation with all stakeholders. This debate should be held in the context of definition of the EU's future energy, climate and industry policies, notes the organisation.
