Consultation on passenger ship safety

The European Commission has officially launched its public consultation on the revision of the passenger ship safety legislaton. It will run until 5 July. Its main objective is to update Directive 2009/45/ EC on rules and standards for passenger ship safety, particularly as regards shipbuilding, machinery, electrical systems,fire protection and safety equipment. This text covers only ships made out of steel, which excludes a large share of ships operating in domestic waters.The Commission intends to remedy that problem. It is also considering rules for a range of other vessels that are currently excluded, such as yachts and historic ships.
