Art Silverblatt has devoted much of his previous work to writing on media literacy, and in this new textbook he applies many of the principles discussed in that work to the analysis of media genres. Each chapter takes a particular analytical approach to the study of genre, and follows discussion of this with a 'lines of inquiry' section, which offers a point-by-point summary of the chapter and suggests direction for analysis and further study. In some chapters, Silverblatt offers examples of genre analysis in order to illustrate how a particular approach operates in practice.
