This book should be compulsory reading for all students on journalism courses across Europe. It is excellent not only in its philosophical ambition and scope but also in the remarkably concise and well-structured account that it gives of a vitally important tradition within North American journalism. Public journalism is a divisive and controversial topic in North America, and increasingly across the rest of the world, but it has had a real impact within news organizations and practice in the US and therefore can be claimed as having a significant intellectual influence to date. The book starts with a series of implicit questions about what journalism should do and what it has the potential to achieve with a more engaged citizenship as its audience. Thus it begins at a position beyond cliches, dreary teleologies or even the dull pragmatism of what works in the daily grind of journalism.
