Nico Carpentier and Erik Spinoy (eds), Discourse Theory and Cultural Analysis

The discourse theory of Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe has largely remained within political theory and research, with few examples of work moving beyond these confines. The purpose of this collection is to encourage and exemplify this move, showing the relevance of their theory for cultural analysis. In their introduction, Nico Carpentier and Erik Spinoy provide an outline of Laclau and Mouffe's discourse theory and the critiques of it that have been advanced. This sets the stage for a wide-ranging series of chapters covering various arts and media, and analysing a number of different conflicts and their representations. Three chapters look at media representations of political conflict: the 2004 Romanian elections, the Hong Kong handover and urban planning in the Portuguese city of Braga.
