This book originates from the author's doctoral dissertation, defended at the Universities of Orebro and Sodertorn, Sweden, in 2012. The book is the first volume in a new peer-reviewed series Politics and Society in the Baltic Sea Region, published by the University of Tartu Press and devoted to exploring contemporary social and political issues in the countries surrounding the Baltic Sea. While being firmly located in the field of media studies, the book draws on insights from philosophy, anthropology, sociology, cultural studies, critical theories and discourse theory - to name the most prominent disciplines and threads of theoretical inspiration for the author. This is done in order to abandon the media-centred approach to media studies in favour of 'a decentred perspective on the media as sites of discursive struggle' (p. 25).
