District heating must be a cornerstone of a sustainable energy future. This was the unanimous opinion of the approximately 250 district heating and cooling experts from 28 countries who met at the 16th International Symposium on District Heating and Cooling in Hamburg/Germany in September. The HafenCity University of Hamburg, AGFW and IEA DHC/ CHP jointly put on the research symposium, at which research and industry discussed solutions and innovations and exchanged their knowledge. After the introductory words of the organisers, Walter Pelka, President of HafenCity University Hamburg, welcomed the participants as host. Jens Ker-stan, Senator for Environment and Energy of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, said that Hamburg, as the second largest district heating city in Germany, was predestined for the district heating symposium. In his speech, he addressed the discussion about the Moorburg coal-fired power plant and the referendum on the fact that the city of Hamburg has to buy back the district heating network, but also the local problems.
