Respect, Protection and Restoration: Preservation as a Negative or a Positive Duty

Yasha Rohwer and Emma Marris argue that we do not have a prima facie duty to preserve the genetic integrity of species. Rohwer and Marris take the duty to preserve genetic integrity as being equal to the claim that 'humans, all things considered, morally ought to prevent the mixture of genomes between such populations.' As examples of fulfillment of this alleged duty, Rohwer and Marris discuss some efforts to separate hybridized species, such as the North America bison from the domestic cattle, the European wildcat from the domestic cat, and white headed ducks from North American ruddy ducks.
