Influence of Additives on Activity of Hydrotreatment Catalysts

Refining experience in recent years has revealed areas of improvement for hydrotreating catalysts, particularly in the light of the ever increasing integration of hydroconversion processes for heavier fractions. Additives are widely used in Co and Ni promoted MO/Al_2O_3 catalysts to modify properties such as activity, selectivity and deactiva-tion. Cobalt (nickel)-molybdenum catalysts are prepared by impregnation of the same alumina support with a certain amount of Ti (IV) chloride and H_3BO_3. The results indicate that the HDS and HDN activity depends on the additive loading, pH of the starting solution and the method of additive introduction. The role of additives is discussed in the light of ~1H NMR spectrosco-py, which has confirmed the promotion of hydrotreating reactions. This results in a reduction of poly aromatic sulfur and nirogen compounds. Comparative catalyst activity testing was carried out using two commercial catalysts (Harshaw HT-400 E, Harshaw HT-500 E) and four catalysts prepared in our laboratory, namely INA-107, INA-123, INA-38,and INA-14. It was confirmed that boron and titanium additives promote the catalyst hydrotreating activity, particularly with regard to hydro-cracking reactions, and that the laboratory made catalysts are commercially viable.
