Conflict Minerals: Managing an Emerging Supply-Chain Problem

The conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo has claimed 5.4 million lives and continues to devastate the country. This civil unrest, often considered to be the most lethal conflict since World War II, is financed in part by the sale of minerals that are found in many consumer electronics (including cell phones) and other products ranging from automobiles to jewelry. The purchase of products containing conflict minerals from the DRC is financing the violence, rape, and extortion that military and rebel groups use as weapons, while the people of the Congo suffer (Delevingne, 2009; Kristof, 2010).
