The mechanization of production was a unique hallmark of the industrial revolution. This advance, along with the development of infrastructure that allowed major logistical improvements in Europe and the United States, provided access to a series of new products to people of all classes (Cuzziol & Dias, 2014). Simultaneously, Cuzziol and Dias (2014) report that the industrial revolution ushered in the "throw-away culture," which emerged in the United States at the beginning of the mid-nineteenth century, when a variety of cheap raw materials became available for industrial use. It was within this context that paper products eventually emerged to replace those made of fabric, and plastic resins were created and developed to meet the consumption needs of a population that grew substantially throughout the twentieth century (Slade, 2006, as cited in Cuzziol & Dias, 2014).
