The long-term protection of natural resources is a critical aspect of sustainable development. However, it has long been recognised that the management of these resources is complex due to the myriad of stakeholders and institutions involved, with each often pursuing their own agendas. Consequently, much depends upon how these different bodies interact to produce more coordinated strategies to manage natural resources sustainably and to respond to the dangers of free-riding by some actors.
