Muckraker: as a forthright public-interest journalist, Mark Dowie wears that moniker with pride. He first came to prominence with his 1977 expose of the fire hazards posed by the Ford Pinto. Here, he tackles a broader, more diffuse, and (literally) less explosive topic, but one that directly affects a larger part of the planet. Dowie presents his subject as "a good guy vs. good guy story" (p. ix), but the clear protagonists are residents of areas designated as national parks or nature reserves.
