Alaska's Place in the West: From the Last Frontier to the Last Great Wilderness

By the 1990s, New Western historians had successfully chased Frederick Jackson Turner's notorious Frontier Thesis out of the Wild West, but it can be argued that scholars stopped short at the Pacific Ocean and allowed Turner's famed interpretation to escape into the Far North. In her influential work, The Legacy of Conquest (W.W. Norton, 1987), Patricia Nelson Limerick noted that many of the patterns she explored in western history also applied to Alaska but regretted that time and space prohibited its inclusion into her study.
