Eden on the Charles: The Making of Boston

Boston has always occupied an unusual place in American life: central in some ways and eccentric in others. In Eden on the Charles, Michael Rawson does not scant the latter side of the story, but he emphasizes the former. Much of modern American environmental history, he argues, derives from the experience of nineteenth-century Boston. In coping with the challenges of growth, the city was a leader in pioneering the institutions that would come to define most Americans' relations to the natural world as their nation became a largely urban one.
