The Italian island of Sardinia is wild only in the imagination of other Italians (and some of the few foreigners who think about it). For thousands of years, it has featured a cultural landscape, even in its interior uplands. In the 1990s, some Sardinians, some Italians, and a few international nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) thought a region of east-central Sardinia should be made into a park. This aroused local resistance arising from several motives, none more important than the fear that locals would lose control over how land and resources such as grazing land would be used in their own backyard. The matter came to a head between 1998 and 2005, and antipark forces prevailed.
