Making Rocky Mountain National Park: The Environmental History of an American Treasure

With the centennial of the US national park system looming in 2016, Making Rocky Mountain National Park will undoubtedly take its place among the forthcoming array of books addressing the subject of national parks. Focusing on a single park and even more specifically on the environmental history of that park, it will add substantially to this literature and our understanding of the national park idea. The author has astutely conflated history, culture, and science to explain how Rocky Mountain National Park, as managed by the National Park Service, has changed over the century since it was established. The author mostly places these changes in a broader context, enabling the reader to appreciate the diverse forces at work on this park as Well as our evolving relationship with nature more generally.
