Forests for the People: The Story of the Eastern National Forests is a long-overdue history of the eastern national forests, returning to a topic last reviewed in The Lands Nobody Wanted, a 1977 Conservation Foundation policy report by William E. Shands and Robert G. Healy. After thirty-six years, much has changed in the eastern national forests: some are being "loved to death," others have been substantially altered through new management practices, and still others have enjoyed the return (and now delisting) of the endangered gray wolf and other species. Consequently, the time is ripe for a book that weaves the general history of American forestry into the narrative of the eastern national forests.
