Euro NCAP has released the results for seats put through its first round of rear-impact testing. It is working with Thatcham, the Motor Insurance Repair Research Centre. The tests are performed on a sled instead of in the vehicle. This limits the ability to recognise the benefits of other pre-crash measures, such as seat-belt pretensioning. It also discounts the role of vehicle structures.rnSafety engineers at several manufacturers have questioned the effectiveness and relevance of the tests. The protocol looks at the seat's geometry, the size and shape of the head restraint and its proximity to the occupant, and its dynamic performance in crashes at three speeds.rnEuro NCAP secretary-general Dr Michiel van Ratingen says: "Without this test, a consumer would never know how a seat would perform. It will encourage manufacturers to think again about their seats' design."
