MEPs call for greater consumer protection from pesticides

Consumer protection must be upped with relation to pesticide levels in food. More research into their cumulative effects must be given a priority in order to protect the most vulnerable groups in society - children and unborn children. These were the most pressing concerns of MEPs at the 25 October meeting of the European Parliament's Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Committee. Draftsman Robert Sturdy (UK - European People's Party), on presenting his recommendations for a parliamentary opinion on draft regulations on maximum residue levels of pesticides in food (MRLs) to the Committee, said that the Council's amendments from the first reading were much better than the Commission's original proposals had been.
