Transport Council deadlocked over Euro road tolls

EU transport ministers at the 7 October Council failed to smash a long-standing deadlock over the 'Eurovignette' proposal for a Europe-wide road toll system for heavy goods vehicles. A Transport Council press release acknowledged that despite an "exhaustive debate" in which the ministers expressed "differing views on some key aspects" of the Dutch EU presidency's compromise proposal the ministers could not find agreement on the draft directive on the charging of heavy-goods vehicles for the use of certain infrastructures. As a result the statement said the presidency "concluded that, at this stage, it was impossible to reach agreement" on the proposal to revise the existing Eurovignette directive.
