The British government this month hit out at French, Italian and Spanish plans for EU emissions trading as being likely to cause "competitive distortion," in a statement indirectly asking the European Commission not clear them in their present state. "The UK believes that the very narrow scope used in France, Spain and possibly Italy is inconsistent with the [EU's] emission trading directive and would create a damaging competitive distortion between EU countries in sectors such as chemicals and automotive manufacturing if accepted by the European Commission," according to the statement from the environment department.
